Let's be honest: rural workers aren't getting a fair deal.

Right now, 30 states have a rural population that make up 20% or more of the state's total population. None of these states guarantee paid family or medical leave — only two mandate paid sick leave.

For people in those states, that means when you're sick, need to be a caregiver to aging parents, or when your kids are too young to start preschool, you're forced to miss work without pay.

Working families deserve the ability to take care of family obligations and still put food on the table.

That's where paid leave comes in. It's common sense, it's fair, and it's popular. According to the National Partnership for Women and Families, 80% of rural Americans support permanent paid family and medical leave.

Rural small businesses can't compete with the benefits that big corporations offer. But a nationwide paid leave program would change that by creating a level playing field and letting workers – no matter where they live – enjoy the benefits of strong pro-worker and pro-family policies.

That's why Tim Walz signed a paid leave and child tax credit policy into law as Governor of Minnesota. And together, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will get paid family leave done and give rural workers the resources they need to take care of themselves and their families.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and their MAGA friends oppose just about every pro-family policy you can think of: family leave, in vitro fertilization (IVF), free school lunches, Head Start programs, and the child tax credit. JD Vance even went so far as to claim that child care programs lead to "unhappy, unhealthy children."

The United States doesn't need harebrained leadership, it needs a Harris/Walz White House and a paid leave program for all of America. One Country is working to build a winning rural coalition in states like Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and many others.
