Working in the movement to end gun violence can be grueling, John. To keep spirits up and remain hopeful, we have to celebrate our wins, which is why we’re excited to share that this month is the one-year anniversary of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. To date, this is one of the biggest victories we’ve achieved as a movement!! ✨
March For Our Lives was the first national gun violence prevention group to call for this office in 2019. Even after we were told we shouldn’t bother fighting for it, that it would never happen, we persisted. Well John, after four years of concerted pressure by some meddling kids, President Biden established the first-ever federal office dedicated to ending gun violence.

This victory taught us a lot: Activism isn’t an immediate solution — that’s what makes it so difficult and rewarding. It’s standing firm even when those in power refuse to listen, because as we’ve demonstrated, eventually they will. 💪
This was a HUGE win for the movement and an example of how mobilizing young people can effect change even at the country’s highest office.
In its first year, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention has already saved lives. Below are just some of the office’s accomplishments ⬇️:
- The Department of Justice issued the most comprehensive guide ever released on secure storage of firearms.
- The Department of Education awarded more than $280 million to help hire and train school mental health professionals.
- Provided $250 million in funding for community-based violence prevention initiatives.
- Connected with local officials to identify survivor and victim needs after shootings and worked with federal agencies to provide resources to impacted communities.
This anniversary is a moment to celebrate, reflect, and set our sights on the future. If we can achieve this, what can’t we achieve together?
