Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good morning, everyone!

Congress is back in session with a busy week to close out the September work period.

But first, a quick update on last week: My Performance Over Politics bill passed on the House floor as a part of a wider legislative package to counter the political ESG movement and strengthen our financial system. While Wall Street may be hundreds of miles away from Southeast Wisconsin, the decisions made in board rooms impact every single American—especially in regard to retirement savings. I was pleased to see this bill pass and look forward to seeing it make its way through the Senate next. You can watch my full floor speech on this bill here:

Today, the House will bring another bill of mine to the floor—the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act. The inspiration behind this bill comes from a terrible attack that took place in our district, at the Waukesha Christmas parade, nearly 3 years ago. The Waukesha community continues to heal from the violence unleashed that day, but the community is resilient.  While we must take time to remember those who we lost, we should also turn an eye toward preventing a similar attack from ever happening again. Which is why I’ve introduced this bill. You can read more about this bill in my latest op-ed I penned for The Hill here.

Left-wing groups like the Bail Project and Minnesota Freedom Fund aggressively solicit funds nationwide, often with the help of celebrities and left-wing politicians, to pay bail with little regard to the criminal histories of those they’re putting back on the streets. The Minnesota Freedom Fund paid the bail for notable offenders including George Howard, a man charged with domestic abuse who two weeks after having his bail paid, was charged with second-degree murder in a road rage incident; and Shawn Michael Tillman, who three weeks after having his bail paid murdered a man at a light rail station in St. Paul and is now serving a life sentence for that crime.

The Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act is the safeguard our communities desperately need, ensuring that our legal system prioritizes safety and accountability over dangerous ideological experiments.

Last week, I was humbled to receive the 2024 Guardian of Small Business award from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). According to the NFIB, the award is reserved for legislators who vote consistently with small businesses on the key issues identified by small business owners. To that end, I am proud to report that I have a 100% voting record in favor of small businesses in the 118th Congress.

The award is especially meaningful for me because for many years, I ran Independent Publishing in Juneau, Wisconsin. I know firsthand the determination and work that goes into running a small business and I intend to continue voting for pro-small business legislation.

Last, but not least, I was honored to be named the Federal Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) alongside my Senate counterpart, Senator Katie Britt.

Like NAMIC, I understand how important the state-based system of regulation is to promoting a healthy, robust, and competitive insurance market and economy overall. It’s my ongoing mission in Congress to maintain this system and stop blatant federal overreach through legislative efforts. I can’t thank NAMIC enough for serving as a unified voice for mutual insurers. The work of the organization has proved to be an invaluable resource as I advocate for solutions in Congress. I look forward to working closely with NAMIC in the years to come!

Have a great week everyone and thanks for tuning into the latest congressional updates!
