A few weeks ago, Hilco Development Partners ignored proper safety procedures while attempting to demolish a smokestack at the former Crawford Coal plant. The botched demolition covered blocks of Little Village in dust and ash, further endangering the public health of the community during a pandemic.
This is unacceptable.
I am grateful that the DPH and EPA promptly investigated this matter and released their results to the public. While these initial results allay some of our worst fears about the demolition, they do not take away from the fact that our community was put at risk by Hilco’s disregard for public health. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration has systematically defunded the EPA and rolled back over 95 regulations -- ultimately setting us up for further disaster.

We need the EPA to protect communities such as ours in Southwest Chicago. As a long-time resident of Little Village, I have seen the damage corporations can do to our water, soil, and air quality when left unchecked. I echo the concerns of my neighbors and constituents and demand that the EPA restore and strengthen its regulations as well as the ability to enforce its guidelines. Our communities deserve equitable access to the clean air and water they need to thrive, regardless of zip code, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. Black and brown communities will no longer forfeit our health for corporate profit and all of us will remain vigilant in this process.
