As discussed yesterday, the just-released collection of Bob Dylan and The Band’s “The 1974 Live Recordings” is an important document for rock and roll fans. The “sampler” of this collection is streaming now—20 tracks culled from the larger box set of 431 songs over 27 CDs (I’ve been informed that mine is in the mail).

Most of this material has never been heard before, and the sampler contains key tracks that convey the urgency Dylan and The Band performed with. The review in the British music rag “Mojo” probably captures the spirit of this collection best when it implores listeners to “Pick a track at random and you’ll find yourself stunned by how hard these six were pushing.” Listen to this souped-up version of Dylan’s folk number “The Ballad of Hollis Brown
