John,
A world where one man wields the power of a trillion dollars is dangerously close to becoming a reality as Elon Musk, already the world's richest person, is on track to become history's first trillionaire.[1] Yes, you read that right: trillionaire.
This isn't a story of success and hard work. It's the latest example of how our tax system is rigged to benefit the ultra-wealthy at the expense of hardworking families. Musk has built his fortune as the head of companies that consistently dodge their fair share of taxes. He's exploited loopholes, taken advantage of tax breaks, and left the rest of us to pick up the tab.
And now, he's using his billions to reshape our democracy in his image. Musk is funding a right-wing super PAC, pouring tens of millions of dollars into electing candidates who will protect his wealth and power.[2]
This isn't just about politics for Elon Musk and his billionaire buddies: it's about preserving a rigged system that allows them to amass even more wealth while working families struggle. We must address the deepening inequalities that unchecked billionaire wealth continues to create.
We need to tax billionaires like Elon Musk before they become trillionaires and buy our democracy outright. Demand that Congress raise taxes on billionaires like Elon Musk!
Unsurprisingly, following Elon Musk’s right-wing donations, he’s being rumored for a role in a potential Republican White House to “reduce waste and needless government regulation”.[3]
But let's be clear about what these euphemisms really mean. When Republicans talk about "reducing waste," they're not talking about efficiency, they mean slashing vital programs like Medicare and Social Security while protecting tax breaks for billionaires like Musk. And when they complain about “needless government regulation” they mean corporations should have a free hand to pollute our air and water, rip us off, and bust unions.
Wealth inequality in America is completely out of control, and Musk is the poster child for this injustice. But we have solutions like the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax which would ensure that the ultra-wealthy pay at least a 25% tax rate on their total income, including unrealized capital gains.[4] This would generate hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue that could be invested in our communities, our infrastructure, and our future.
The clock is ticking. Every day we delay is another day Musk and his billionaire friends grow richer and more powerful. It's time to take a stand for tax fairness and democracy.
Tell Congress to tax Elon Musk and other billionaires before it's too late!
Thank you for standing with us in this crucial fight,
David Kass
