I’ll be honest, John — sometimes my friends gently suggest I should find other things to talk about besides the importance of state supreme Court seats. (Does that happen to you? I have a feeling I’m not alone here in this group.)
But I believe that as folks become more keenly aware of the potency of state supreme courts, they’re going to have a significantly greater awareness and focus on those elections. So as pro-democracy, fair map champions, I think it’s our duty to make sure our friends and family know how important these races are.
Check out this recent headline from Democracy Docket:
Abortion, Voting Rights, Gerrymandering:
What’s at Stake in 2024 Supreme Court Races
The summary of the article is profoundly simple: With state supreme courts playing a vital role in deciding cases about gerrymandering, there is almost nothing that’s not at stake in 2024 with state supreme court races.
Because as A.G. Holder says: No matter what issue you care about most, the path to progress runs through the fair maps. We’re talking about protecting fundamental rights, adhering to legal and judicial norms, and upholding the rule of law. We’re talking about the very fibers of our democracy.
That’s why the Democracy Defenders program endorses state supreme court candidates and other state-level leaders who will focus on preserving democracy in their states. So much depends on having elected officials who want to protect the fundamental freedoms we value. Can you chip in to help elect those types of leaders across the country? [[link removed]]
Look: the current environment that we’re dealing with in state supreme court races is not a partisan environment as much as it is a democracy vs. an authoritarian paradigm.
Right now, there are nearly 70 active voting and election-related lawsuits across 25 states that could make their way up to state supreme courts — and there are 82 state supreme court justices to elect this fall. The outcomes of these races are going to have deep and lasting impacts on our lives. We have to do everything we can to make sure our pro-democracy champions have the votes they need to win.
