Public input sought for future development at Rockport Recreation Area

bird's-eye view of water and rocky land

Those who are interested in future development at Rockport Recreation Area are encouraged to attend a public open house and meeting next week in Alpena.

A draft development plan, designed to complement the park's Phase 2 general management plan [ [link removed] ], proposes the addition of a campground and overnight lodging facilities, along with expanded trail uses and other infrastructure enhancements.

Boasting a fascinating past as a limestone quarry, Rockport Recreation Area stretches along the Lake Huron shoreline in Alpena and Presque Isle counties. The 4,237-acre park offers an inviting blend of history and outdoor adventure. Visitors can explore the remnants of the 300-acre quarry, alongside limestone formations, unique sinkholes and a protected natural area. Whether searching for fossils, horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, stargazing or exploring the lakeshore, this park offers a one-of-a-kind experience.

Oct. 3 open house, meeting

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host two public input sessions Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Alpena Township Hall, located at 4385 U.S. 23 N in Alpena.

* *Open house 2-4 p.m. *People are invited to stop in at any time to view the proposed development plan, share feedback and ask questions of DNR staff and the consulting team.
* *Meeting 6:30-8:30 p.m. *DNR staff and the consulting team will more formally present an overview of the proposed development plan, followed by an opportunity for people to ask questions and provide comment.

"We're eager to hear ideas on how to best serve the growing number of anglers, trail users and rock hounds, including potential overnight accommodations and expanded trail uses."
