Lifesaving heroes to be honored at Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference in Tacoma

TACOMA — Using a belt as a tourniquet, saving a choking co-worker, and performing CPR, all became an unexpected part of the job for several Washington workers being honored with this year’s Lifesaving Awards.
Thirty-five workplace heroes will be honored Wednesday, Sept. 25, during the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference in Tacoma.
Among the award winners this year are:
* Four ferry workers who rescued a group of boaters and their dogs when their cabin cruiser was hit by high winds and waves;
* An L&I electrical inspector who saved an elderly man he found lying in snow; and,
* More than a dozen workers who performed CPR, used an automated external defibrillator, or provided other aid to save lives.

“These folks did not leave for work in the morning thinking they’d be faced with a life-threatening situation. None of us really knows how we will react until it happens,” said Craig Blackwood, assistant director for L&I’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
“The people who are being honored all acted quickly, decisively, and compassionately in response to unexpected emergencies—and their actions saved lives,” he said.
In addition to the Lifesaving Awards, the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board gives a Humanitarian Award to people who performed a heroic act, but despite best efforts, were unable to save the victim’s life. This year’s award goes to three workers who were providing scuba diving training when they pulled the body of a missing diver out of Lake Washington. They performed CPR until they could get him to first responders, but unfortunately, he died at the hospital.
Recipients of the Lifesaving and Humanitarian Awards are selected by a committee of business and labor representatives.
For law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and similar professions, the lifesaving action must be above and beyond a typical emergency they normally face. The two-day Safety and Health Conference, sponsored by the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board [ [link removed] ] and the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries [ [link removed] ] (L&I), includes safety demonstrations and workshops featuring the latest workplace safety and health technologies, innovations and strategies, along with special events like the Poletop Rescue Competition.
The Lifesaving Awards will be presented during the opening ceremony at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center beginning at 8:00 a.m.

TACOMA — Utilizar un cinturón como torniquete, salvar a un compañero de trabajo que se ahogaba y realizar una resucitación cardiopulmonar (CPR, por su sigla en inglés), todo ello se convirtió en una parte inesperada del trabajo de varios trabajadores de Washington que serán galardonados con los Premios Salvavidas (Lifesaving Awards) de este año.
Treinta y cinco héroes del trabajo serán homenajeados el miércoles 25 de septiembre durante la Conferencia del Gobernador sobre seguridad y salud industrial que se celebrará en Tacoma.
Este año, entre los premiados figuran:
* Cuatro trabajadores del ferry que rescataron a un grupo de navegantes y a sus perros cuando su crucero con cabina fue golpeado por fuertes vientos y olas;
* Un inspector eléctrico de L&I que salvó a un hombre mayor que encontró tirado en la nieve; y,
* Más de una docena de trabajadores que practicaron CPR, utilizaron un desfibrilador externo automático o prestaron otro tipo de ayuda para salvar vidas.

“Estas personas no salieron a trabajar por la mañana pensando que se enfrentarían a una situación de riesgo vital. Ninguno de nosotros sabe realmente cómo va a reaccionar hasta que ocurre”, dijo Craig Blackwood, director adjunto de la División de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional de L&I.
“Todas las personas homenajeadas actuaron con rapidez, decisión y compasión en respuesta a emergencias inesperadas, y sus acciones salvaron vidas”, añadió.
Además de los premios salvavidas, el Consejo de Salud y Seguridad Industrial del Gobernador concede un Premio Humanitario a las personas que realizaron un acto heroico, pero a pesar de sus mejores esfuerzos, no pudieron salvar la vida de la víctima. El premio de este año se ha concedido a tres trabajadores que impartían una capacitación de buceo cuando sacaron del lago Washington el cuerpo de un buceador desaparecido. Le practicaron CPR hasta que pudieron llevarlo con los primeros intervinientes, pero por desgracia murió en el hospital.
Los galardonados con los Premios Humanitarios y Salvavidas son seleccionados por un comité de representantes empresariales y sindicales.
En el caso de los agentes de la policía, bomberos, técnicos de emergencias médicas y profesiones similares, la acción de salvamento debe ir más allá de una emergencia típica a la que se enfrentan normalmente.
