Justice for All in the Age of COVID-19

New Podcast Episode Available Now

The unprecedented public health emergency caused by COVID-19 is posing a major crisis for justice defenders around the world. This week on WJP's Rule of Law Talk podcast, we are pleased to welcome Hina Jilani, a member of The Elders and Co-Chair of the Task Force on Justice, and Maaike de Langen, Program Lead on Justice For All with the Pathfinders. They join WJP Chief Engagement Officer Ted Piccone to discuss challenges for delivering justice for all during the COVID-19 crisis, and how justice defenders should respond.

Before the COVID-19 crisis hit, frontline justice actors were already facing a huge gap between demand and supply of justice services. How should justice actors respond to this crisis? How can we build back better to narrow that gap — a gap which we estimated before the pandemic includes 1.5 billion people who can not resolve their everyday justice problems.

To help answer these questions, we are honored to welcome Hina Jilani to the Rule of Law Talk Podcast. Jilani is a leading figure in the global campaign for human rights and a pioneering lawyer and women's rights activist in her native Pakistan. She is also a member of The Elders and Co-Chair of the Task Force on Justice — an initiative of the Pathfinders for Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, which in April 2020 released a key briefing on "Jusitce for All and the Public Health Emergency."
Also joining us is Maaike de Langen, program lead on Justice For All with the Pathfinders, and a fellow with the Center on International Cooperation at New York University. The Center coordinates the Pathfinders' work as a public-private initiative to support implementation of the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 16, which includes providing access to justice for all.

WJP's Rule of Law Talk podcast features conversations with leading lights on the front lines of understanding and advancing government accountability, fundamental rights, open government, safety and security, access to justice, and other rule of law topics. Subscribe to Rule of Law Talk on Spotify, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.
