Dear Friend,
Last week, I introduced a bill to help survivors of domestic violence. Nationwide, an estimated 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 4 men have experienced a form of physical violence from a partner. Survivors may be subject to financial abuse too, including restricted access to income or information about their finances, making it difficult to leave a violent situation. I introduced the Skills Against Violence Act to create a workforce development program for survivors of domestic violence to gain financial independence.
The Skills Against Violence Act will give victims of abuse the support and tools they need to find a job so they can turn the page to the next chapter of their lives. No one should be forced to stay in a dangerous situation due to a lack of financial resources. My bill helps creates a way out, a lifeline for survivors.
We recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the landmark legislation that prevents and addresses violence against women and provides justice and support for survivors.
Congress must keep building on this progress. I look forward to seeing the Skills Against Violence Act become law.
Survivors of abuse can call the 24-hour hotline: 800-799-SAFE (7233) for immediate intervention, support and resources.
It’s an honor to serve Texas.
Sincerely,
Colin Allred Member of Congress
