As we navigate this historic election year, it is crucial to remember the impact of our advocacy and policy work at New American Leaders. Our efforts to build a pipeline of candidates who will make a tangible difference in their communities are more important than ever. These leaders champion policy wins that uplift underrepresented communities, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.

Our commitment to equipping and empowering new American leaders remains steadfast. To highlight this, we are thrilled to share a video spotlighting a member of the NAL Elected Officials network. This video celebrates those defending immigrant communities in elected office, and highlights the transformative potential of NAL’s training programs.

The combined impact of the NAL network allows us to foster a more inclusive democracy and achieve meaningful policy victories for all, like the following: 

• In April 2024, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed HB24-1098, the For Cause Evictions bill, into law. Introduced by Colorado State Senator Julie Gonzales, a NAL trainer and alum, this new law protects renters against discriminatory practices and is an important step forward in addressing housing instability.
• Arizona State Representative Analise Oritz co-sponsored a bill that was signed into law: HB 2297 addresses the state’s housing affordability and homelessness crises by making it easier to transition abandoned strip malls and businesses complexes into housing
• New York City Councilmembers Alexa Avilés, Shahana K. Hanif, Crystal Hudson, Pierina Ana Sanchez, Amanda Farías, Julie Won, and Shekar Krishnan sponsored two key pieces of legislation under the “How Many Stops Acts” to hold law enforcement accountable for when, why, and who they pull over.
