As September draws to a close, I want to take a moment to update you on the important work we've been doing on behalf of Upstate New York.
This month has been filled with both challenges and opportunities, and through it all, my focus has remained on delivering real solutions that impact our communities. Whether it's advocating for local businesses, pushing for common-sense policies, or fighting for the needs of our families, my commitment to serving you never wavers.
I'm excited to announce that I’ve secured $10.3 million in federal funding for six local airports, including Greater Binghamton and Tri-Cities Airport.
These funds will go towards much-needed upgrades to terminals, aprons, passenger boarding bridges, and runway lighting. Through the FAA's Airport Infrastructure and Improvement Grant programs, we’re investing in the future of our regional airports, improving the passenger experience, and boosting operational efficiency.
This is a big win for our community and our economy.
I'm proud to announce that I've joined forces with Rep. Doris Matsui to secure vital funding for mental health awareness training, including programs like Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
Mental health affects all of us, our families, friends, and neighbors. That's why we've sent a bipartisan letter to House Appropriations leadership, urging them to match or exceed the Senate Appropriations Committee's funding level for these essential programs.
Why is this so important? Programs like MHFA are game-changers in how we approach mental health crises. They equip our first responders, educators, and community members with the skills to:
1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges
2. Provide initial support to individuals experiencing these issues
3. Guide people towards appropriate professional help
The impact of MHFA is already impressive – over 3 million people across the United States have been trained in this evidence-based, early-intervention program. But we can do more. With proper funding, we can expand this vital training and continue to improve crisis response across New York and the nation.
As your representative, I'm committed to fighting for the mental health and well-being of all New Yorkers. This effort is just one step in our ongoing work to create a more supportive, understanding, and healthier community for everyone.
The opioid crisis continues to devastate families and communities across Upstate New York, and addressing this epidemic remains one of my top priorities. In September, I took significant steps forward by joining forces with the Bipartisan Opioid Task Force, where we are focused on bringing real solutions to this growing problem.
In our district alone, opioid addiction has torn apart families, contributed to rising overdose rates, and placed tremendous strain on our healthcare systems. We can’t stand by while more lives are lost.
The fight against the opioid crisis is personal for many of us, and it’s going to take all of us working together to turn the tide. We need to continue raising awareness, increasing treatment options, and holding those responsible for trafficking and overprescribing opioids accountable. Together, we can save lives and begin to heal our communities.
I had the privilege of recognizing our local Vietnam veterans with a heartfelt pinning ceremony in Broome County.
These brave men and women sacrificed so much in service to our country, and it’s important that we continue to honor their commitment and bravery. The Vietnam War was a difficult chapter in our history, and too often, these veterans returned home without the recognition they deserved.
This ceremony was a small gesture to thank them for their courage, dedication, and service. It was truly humbling to stand alongside these heroes and hear their stories, reminding us all of the profound impact they’ve had on our nation.
