There are many reasons immigrants don't raise unemployment. One is they go to where the jobs are. Another is immigrants don't just take jobs, they create jobs too.
Historically, states with high rates of immigration generally have lower unemployment rates than states with very few immigrants.
And these two figures below from the Cato Institute, show that immigrant workers and natives are generally complementary not in competition for jobs.
Unemployment is primarily caused by macroeconomic policy mistakes.
The charts going around showing native employment down and foreign employment up in recent years, are an artifact of baby boomers retiring. We looked up the prime-age employment-to-population ratio by nativity in the BLS data and it looks like this:
We're all for securing the border. But the people who are stealing jobs are the politicians, not the immigrants.
2) NYC Health Director Who Went to Sex Parties During Lockdown Gets Fired
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
We reported on Friday that Jay Varma was caught on video talking about partaking in multiple wild drug-fueled sex parties while he was issuing New York City public health orders keeping businesses closed and kids out of school.
The firing does raise some questions, though. Dr. Vinay Prasad of UCSF asks the most important one:
Why exactly did SIGA Technologies hire an incompetent, hypocritical public-health group-thinker in the first place?
3) It's Now Official: Almost All Democrats Are in Favor of Abolishing Gas Cars
We are so sick of Democrats pretending they don't want to force Americans to buy cars they don't want.
On Friday, the House voted on Michigan Rep. John James's resolution to repeal the EPA light-duty vehicle rules that would effectively mandate battery-electric vehicles. All but eight house Democrats voted to keep the auto ban in place.
In the last 12 months, EVs accounted for less than 10% of light-duty vehicle sales, but the Biden EPA rule mandates them on the following timeline:
If about 90% of buyers still want internal combustion vehicles a year and a half from now when the model year 2027s start hitting lots – but only 68% are allowed to have them – about a million Americans will be forced to buy cars they don't want. And it gets worse every year after that.
Amazingly 190 House Democrats and 1 Republican (Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania) voted FOR the car ban! Here are the eight brave souls in the Democratic caucus who voted for auto freedom to choose:
A petition of 30 senators can force a Senate vote, which is privileged and cannot be filibustered.
Would Biden use a veto to save his EPA EV mandates, even though his VP claims of late that she no longer supports them?
We may have finally arrived at the peak of climate change idiocy. People suffering from asthma are contributing to a warming planet:
Infamous FTC chair Lina Khan is blaming the rise in inhaler prices on the companies that manufacture them – but she should blame the climate crazies and her own Biden administration colleagues at the EPA.
The chemicals used in traditional inhalers will be banned in 99 days. Inhaler manufacturers and importers must hire lawyers and engineers if they want to continue to make anything like the traditional inhaler.
The EPA rule is here and was covered in our regulation report by Casey Mulligan, including the EPA's Orwellian claim that the rule will save consumers and businesses money!
Khan points to cheaper inhalers in Europe, which is also banning those chemicals. But the European policy is phased in gradually, rather than a sudden ban on January 1, 2025. So no surprise that US prices are spiking higher and faster.
Chicago is falling apart. Mayor Brandon Johnson's completely out of his depth. He was unequipped for the job and his campaign was all about slogans, Marxist rhetoric from his allies in the Chicago Teachers Union, and race. Now those who can are in a rush to leave. His administration is falling apart. And the city is falling apart rapidly...
The public schools prepare Chicago schoolchildren only for prison, not success in life. Public transportation is dangerous and filthy and smells like a urinal. Only the poor use it or those who have no other choice. The city government is a billion dollars in debt. And the public schools are a billion in debt. Where's the money? Johnson has no clue. ...
Chicago, already plagued by violent crime, will get worse beginning Sunday. That's because Johnson let the contract for the revolutionary crime-fighting technology called ShotSpotter to lapse without a replacement. Although it alerted police to gunshots and helped police make arrests, Johnson derided it as "walkie talkie on a stick." ...
Black aldermen, representing black residents who are most often the victims of violent crime, have tried to keep ShotSpotter alive, knowing that it could lead to more arrests of racial minority gang members, but Johnson has promised to veto any plan to save it. And corporate media types tie themselves up in knots trying to explain a simple, but terrible truth:
The mayor of Chicago would rather protect the violent over his citizens. He'd rather embrace repeat gang offenders than the people who need his protection.
