This is how we stop the destruction of the Amazon

John – right now, big banks and investors are bankrolling the destruction of the world's rainforests. As Indigenous peoples’ homes go up in flames, and orangutans and tigers flee for their lives, greedy banks fan the flames for profit.

We must expose the scale of this destruction. Our plan is clear: launch an ambitious rainforest expedition in our small research plane, and gather crucial aerial footage and data to uncover the impact of these forest destroyers.

No other organisation can attempt an expedition like this. We’re the only ones with a plane as well as boats and cutting-edge technology, like digital mapping computers and drones. With these resources we can build the vital evidence to present a winning case for forest protection.

We’ve got the tools, but we need your support. Our work is funded by people like you, chipping in a small amount each month. Will you join with a monthly contribution today and help us expose these nature crimes – that are financed by greedy bankers and investors?

Here in Brazil, I’m watching it unfold: swathes of majestic forest ablaze and thousands of animals like jaguars and sloths forced to flee, choked to death, or incinerated. It’s a living nightmare, John.

Bankers are enabling this devastation. They carelessly sign off multimillion-dollar deforestation deals, as they finance major corporations in sectors like industrial agriculture, palm oil and logging. The expansion of industrial agriculture and our global food system is responsible for 80% of global deforestation and the 28,000 species at risk of extinction.

The Earth without a healthy Amazon will be catastrophic for all of us: we’ll be left without one of our most important global defences against the climate crisis and with catastrophic consequences.

John, we can’t let this happen. Will you become a Greenpeace member today, contributing monthly so we can continue to fight for our planet? Every pound you give makes a huge difference.

This is urgent. Next month, governments will meet at the Biodiversity COP16. This is a huge opportunity for us to influence leaders to take action against this horror.

We’ll be there to hold nations to their commitments. We’ll demand that they stop money flowing into nature destruction – and urge them to deliver the promised $20 billion USD to protect biodiversity globally.

But we need to be prepared: if we work together we can gather never-seen-before aerial footage, data, and stories from the frontline. This evidence is vital to winning the case for appropriate and urgent protections for the Amazon – and we can’t do it without you.

Please help fund our vital nature campaigns, so we can expose these corrupt banks and protect the Amazon. Will you join today and become a forest defender?

The future is perilous for the Amazon’s Indigenous Peoples and the precious wildlife that exists nowhere else on Earth. But if protected, the Amazon can be a safe place for rare, magnificent animals and for its cultural diversity, and save millions of lives from the effects of climate change.

Become a Greenpeace member today and be part of our movement to defend nature.

Thank you for standing with us,

Thais Bannwart

Forest Campaigner, Greenpeace Brazil
