Dear John,

This year, the Muslim Public Affairs Council is deeply honored to posthumously recognize extraordinary journalist Shireen Abu Akleh with the Empowering Voices Award on Wednesday, November 13th, in Washington, D.C. For decades, Shireen’s voice brought the truth of the Palestinian struggle to the world. In 2022, her tragic and unjust death shook our hearts, but her legacy continues to inspire. Her commitment to speaking out against oppression and injustice exposed the tyranny to the wider world, and her courage in speaking the truth will impact generations to come.

As we reflect on the profound impact Shireen had on the American Muslim community and many others across the globe, we are reminded that her work, her courage, and her commitment to justice must never be forgotten.

Don’t miss this inspiring event
Since her death, and most notably, since October 7th, the lives of countless more journalists have been taken while reporting on the ongoing atrocities in Palestine. Like Shireen, these men and women courageously stood at the frontlines, bringing to light the truths that the world so desperately needed to hear. Their dedication, sacrifice, and refusal to turn away from injustice are a stark reminder of the crucial role of free, independent journalism.

In honoring Shireen, we honor all of the journalists who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth. Their work is not in vain. Every report, every image, every word carries the weight of the truth – shaking the conscience of the world. As the mental and physical toll on journalists grows, so too does the importance of our role in ensuring their work continues to be heard and acted upon. Now, more than ever, we must stand together, not just to mourn the loss of these brave individuals but to amplify their stories and their voices.

We hope you will join us as we honor the legacy of Shireen Abu Akleh. May her stories continue to live on through us all.
