All of us know somebody who has been impacted by the opioid epidemic. For me, it was my mom. That’s why a huge priority for me in Congress is tackling this crisis head-on. First, by going after the drug cartels.
This month, President Biden signed my bill into law to do exactly that.
The Preventing the Financing of Illegal Synthetic Drugs Act will help save lives by shining a light on the drug cartels who are wreaking havoc on our communities for profit.
Over a hundred thousand people died just last year in the US because of preventable overdoses, and families across the nation will never see their loved ones again. We owe it to these families and those who lost their lives way too soon to do everything in our power to stop this crisis at the source.
I’m proud to have worked across the aisle to get this done, and that is exactly what our constituents expect us to do.
The American people are counting on our leaders in government to rise above blind partisanship to keep our communities healthy, safe, and secure. And that’s exactly what this law does.
But this doesn’t mark the end of our fight to address the overdose epidemic in our country.
I’m still working around the clock to ensure that people who are struggling with addiction have access to the medical care they desperately need — including recently introducing bills inspired by my mom’s own struggle — by providing the opportunity for states to cover substance use disorder treatment and increasing access to the life-saving overdose reversal drug, naloxone, for people who are at-risk of an overdose.
My mom is an example of what’s possible when people get the help they need and I won’t stop fighting for those like her who are often forgotten by politicians in Washington — and I’m grateful to have you by my side.
Thank you for supporting my fight,
Brittany
