John,
Days after the Israeli military killed Lebanese civilians, including a nine-year-old girl, in a timed attack using explosive devices planted in pagers, a political cartoonist with the National Review decided to portray Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress, as a member of Hezbollah.
This is clear anti-Arab bigotry, racism, and Islamophobia — full stop.
As Rashida’s fellow Squad member and Justice Democrats incumbent AOC said, “The way Islamophobia and anti-Arab hatred is so deeply normalized and accepted in our politics is horrifying. It rarely receives the equal condemnation it deserves. It is inexcusable and a massive double standard. This is disgusting. And so is the silence around it. We see it.”
This is just the latest in a series of ugly personal attacks against Rashida since last October when she was one of the first members of Congress to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages on both sides. And as Rashida pointed out, this normalized racism within American media only incites more hate and violence against a community that is already in so much pain.
While this shameful and disgusting racism against Arab and Muslim Americans isn’t new, we must call it out at every turn and ensure Rashida knows we have her back.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
