Bullying Couldn't Break Him: John's Story of Hope for Childhood Obesity Month

John,

Each year, we receive countless stories about children who have or are currently living through weight-based bullying and harassment from their peers. It's often dismissed as a normal part of growing up, but the truth is, bullying can deeply affect a child's life, impacting their physical and mental health, their social well-being, and even their education.

Below, you'll find the inspiring story of John, a young person who has bravely faced weight-based bullying throughout his life.

By donating to the OAC during Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, you're providing the funds that allow us to continue and expand on our efforts to support those vulnerable to bullying. We are committed to programs that educate families about obesity and excess weight, advocate to ensure children can access treatments, support children through their health journeys, and end weight bias once and for all.

John Simon III's early years were filled with challenges. As a child affected by obesity, he faced multiple health issues, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, prediabetes, and severe sleep apnea. But physical ailments were only part of his struggle. He also endured relentless bullying from his peers, making school an unbearable experience. The constant taunts and isolation took a toll on his education, causing him to fall three grades behind. John's childhood was a painful reminder of the devastating impact of weight bias.

Through it all, John's mother remained a steadfast source of love and support. She tirelessly advocated for his health and well-being, ensuring he received the medical care he needed. At 14, John underwent bariatric surgery, a turning point in his journey. After, John found a sense of belonging and purpose within the OAC Community. Connecting with both children and adults who shared similar experiences, he discovered a safe space to heal and grow.

Today, John is a passionate advocate for the OAC. He speaks out against weight bias, fights for access to care, and dreams of becoming a doctor to help others facing similar challenges. John's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community in overcoming adversity. Read more about John's story here.
