John Simon III's early years were filled with challenges. As a child affected by obesity, he faced multiple health issues, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, prediabetes, and severe sleep apnea. But physical ailments were only part of his struggle. He also endured relentless bullying from his peers, making school an unbearable experience. The constant taunts and isolation took a toll on his education, causing him to fall three grades behind. John's childhood was a painful reminder of the devastating impact of weight bias. Through it all, John's mother remained a steadfast source of love and support. She tirelessly advocated for his health and well-being, ensuring he received the medical care he needed. At 14, John underwent bariatric surgery, a turning point in his journey. After, John found a sense of belonging and purpose within the OAC Community. Connecting with both children and adults who shared similar experiences, he discovered a safe space to heal and grow. Today, John is a passionate advocate for the OAC. He speaks out against weight bias, fights for access to care, and dreams of becoming a doctor to help others facing similar challenges. John's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community in overcoming adversity. Read more about John's story here. |
