Stopping the lockdown becoming a downturn Friends
I hope this finds you well and safe - and a massive well done and thanks to all those across the region working on the frontline as key workers, and as volunteers keeping our community safe and strong. It’s been a truly incredible effort.
It could now be that the Peak Covid is behind us - for now. But that means we’ve got a huge job to do, pushing for a plan not just to save lives - but to save livelihoods.
I don’t want to sugar-coat this, but credible forecasters are now predicting the West Midlands will take the biggest punch in the country. If we do nothing, that could mean unemployment rising by anywhere between 50,000 and 150,000.
We cannot let that happen.
That’s why today I’m starting the debate about a plan for our region that is big, bold and green. It calls for an immediate investment boost of over £1.5 billion to get our economy back on the move - and moving in a new direction. Plus we need the budget to deliver the job guarantee scheme which the TUC has called for today.
Based on Labour’s successful Future Jobs Fund, it would make sure that anyone losing their job had work to go to. It worked last time. It would work again today. We want you to help shape the detail of this plan - so if you could, it’d be brilliant if you could fill in the quick survey here: Many thanks Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP
