One-year Spending Round must prioritise local government funding

Reacting to the Chancellor’s announcement of a one-year spending settlement for government departments this September to cover 2020-21, Cllr Peter John, Chair of London Councils, said: “We’re pleased that Government has listened to us and is holding an early Spending Round in September to give some certainty about the overall funding for local government next year.


“It’s essential that the Treasury prioritises local government funding in the Spending Round after a decade of funding reductions – the lives of thousands of vulnerable Londoners who rely on social care services or are homeless depend on it.”

Invest in communities to tackle knife crime

London Councils has responded to a new report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Knife Crime.


The report, which was produced with the support of the charities Barnardo’s and Redthread, highlights the perspectives of young people from across the country on knife crime and its causes.  


Cllr Jas Athwal, London Councils’ Executive Member for Crime & Public Protection, said: “This is a key priority for London boroughs. Alongside the police and other partners, we support a public health approach towards addressing this violence."
