Congress Unanimously Passes Legislation to Increase Protection for Presidential Nominees

NBC: Five days after the second apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, the House on Friday unanimously passed bipartisan legislation that would boost Secret Service protection for the two parties’ presidential nominees, Trump and Kamala Harris, as well as their vice presidential running mates. The vote was 405-0. It required two-thirds support of the House to pass because it came to the floor under an expedited process. In a separate action, lawmakers also passed a resolution expanding the scope of the bipartisan House task force investigating the July 13 Trump assassination attempt to include the second incident (NBC). RedState: The Secret Service, however, claims that both Trump and Harris have the highest level of security already (RedState).

Tim Walz: “We can’t afford four more years of this”
Kamala Harris is the incumbent. She’s the “this.” Daily Mail: MAGA world erupted in mockery of Gov. Tim Walz after he appeared to push a new party taking over the White House next year. Walz told a crowd in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Saturday: ‘We can’t afford four more years of this.’ The line is usually reserved for candidates campaigning against an incumbent executive they are looking to oust and implement change. But in this case, current Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate are looking to take over for Democrat President Joe Biden (Daily Mail). Mollie Hemingway: Tim Walz giving his full-throated endorsement of Trump-Vance was NOT what I had on my bingo card for this weekend (X).

Governor Gavin Newsom Openly Opposes Tough-on-Crime Legislation
CBS: A new poll from a San Francisco-based think tank showed overwhelming voter support for Prop 36, a tough-on-crime measure. An exasperated Gov. Gavin Newsom called the bill a “real setback” for California. “I know people are frustrated,” Newsom said. “Prop 36 is about bringing us back to a 1980’s mindset where it’s possession of drugs and you end up in state prison.” The survey is from the Public Policy Institute of California, a nonprofit organization that describes itself as a nonpartisan think tank with the mission to inform and improve the state’s public policy “through independent, objective, nonpartisan research.” The poll shows that 71% of voters intend to vote yes on Prop 36 while 26% oppose it. The measure would implement harsher penalties for stealing, overturning the reforms from 2014’s Prop 47 which softened punishment for shoplifting and drug dealing (CBS). End Wokeness: Gov. Newsom slams Proposition 36: “It would bring us back to the 1980s. The impact this will have on black and brown residents is next level.” 71% of California voters are planning to support the measure, which jails drug traffickers and shoplifters (X).

Kamala Harris Demands Donald Trump Accept Another Debate on CNN
Early voting has already begun in Virginia, Minnesota and South Dakota. Harris’ campaign said in a statement that the American people “deserve another opportunity” to watch the two debate. “Vice President Harris is ready for another opportunity to share a stage with Donald Trump, and she has accepted CNN’s invitation to a debate on October 23.” Trump fired back at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Saturday, saying that it was too late to do another, especially after she rejected additional debate offers from Trump in the past… Trump did a CNN debate with President Joe Biden in late June that went so poorly for Biden that he ended up being forced out of the race by his own party (Daily Wire). Dan McLaughlin: Harris now wants another CNN debate, so it would be CNN-ABC-CNN, with CBS hosting the VP debate. Why CNN twice but no Fox? Since when does one side get all home games (X)?

Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner this year is on October 17 and is already sold out with 1,500 guests expected to attend the ballroom gala in Midtown Manhattan (Daily Wire). Collin Rugg: The Harris Campaign says she will be campaigning in a battleground state instead (X). Townhall: The event is known to be a place where Republican and Democratic presidential candidates are invited as headliners and then roast each other. Some believe this is part of why Harris won’t be in attendance—to avoid a run-in with Trump and duck a potential confrontation (Townhall).
