Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
Deaf Awareness Week, September 23-29, 2024
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Texans play significant roles in shaping the personality of our great state. Governor Abbott has proclaimed September 23-29, 2024, to be Deaf Awareness Week in Texas. This proclamation recognizes the contributions of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community to our society.
To observers, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing make up a unique culture group that uses visual communication such as American Sign Language, written communication, and lip-reading. Since anyone can become part of this community with hearing loss, it is a rich culture that incorporates people from many different backgrounds. With different applications of visual communication, Deaf and Hard of Hearing people bring valuable perspectives and give innovative input in the workforce, schools, and at home.
Take some time to learn about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Get to know the co-worker, neighbor, or family member who communicates differently from you. Learn about the possible accommodations that enhance communication and promote inclusion. There is much that can be achieved as we move toward an understanding of the differences as well as the similarities of people around us. Please join the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in celebrating Deaf Awareness Week on September 23-29, 2024.
