Immigrants Are Making Ohio Great. Let’s Talk About That. [[link removed]]
20 years ago, Springfield, Ohio, had a problem. Like many communities in the Rust Belt, it seemed like good times were a thing of the past. Once a manufacturing hub, the city had been losing population for decades, with rising unemployment and falling incomes. Enter Haitian immigrants.
FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Many Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio are legally present with permission to work with Temporary Protected Status.
The executive branch has the authority to provide TPS to nationals of certain countries experiencing problems that make it difficult or unsafe for them to return. Certain Haitian nationals have been granted TPS in the U.S. due to the violence, instability, and natural disasters that have impacted Haiti in recent years.
This fact sheet from the American Immigration Council explains how TPS is designated and the benefits it grants.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“[...] Toledoans, like the rest of Ohioans, are aging out of the work force at the same time birthrates are falling. Immigrants and refugees have become crucial to the economy. The American Immigration Council reports 97 percent have a job in Ohio, paid $418 million in taxes, and brought $1.4 billion in spending power to the state.”
