Get the Facts: Stillbirths
Every day, families across the country leave the hospital with empty baby carriers and without their little ones in their arms. In fact, each year in the United States more than 21,000 babies are lost to stillbirth. While there are known risk factors, stillbirth does not discriminate. Every demographic across the U.S. is affected by this tragedy. While stillbirth often goes undiscussed, the number of babies lost to stillbirth is much higher than the number of deaths for children aged 0-14 from preterm birth, SIDS, accidents, drownings, guns, fire, and flu combined. Still, studies estimate that a minimum of 25% of stillbirths, or around 5,250 babies each year, could be prevented. That’s why this Congress I was happy to cosponsor the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act of 2024 as well as the SHINE for Autumn Act. This past Thursday, September 19, 2024, was National Stillbirth Prevention Day and it is my hope that through continued research and raising awareness of this issue, we will eventually be able to eradicate stillbirth altogether. No family should be faced with the devastation of leaving the hospital without their little one. Even one child lost to stillbirth is one too many.
