John,

Donald Trump was widely mocked for his bizarre claim that Haitian immigrants were eating pets in the small town of Springfield, Ohio.

While the claim was quickly debunked, the ripple effect of his statement is still going.

According to a recent YouGov poll, 52% of Trump supporters believe Trump’s claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Ohio.

Distressingly, more believe other lies he told in the most recent presidential debate, including the idea that, in some states, it is legal to kill an infant after birth.

We’ll talk more about the impact of Trump’s conspiracies and misinformation in a moment, but if you support COURIER’s efforts to expose right-wing lies, can you chip in $25 now? [[link removed]]

Here are more distressing numbers from the YouGov poll:
* 70% of Trump supporters believe millions of undocumented immigrants are arriving in the U.S. every month.
* 81% of Trump supporters believe Venezuela is purposely sending criminals and people from mental institutions into the U.S.
* 43% of Trump supporters believe it’s legal in some states to kill a baby after birth.

The poll confirms something we already know: Donald Trump’s lies might be laugh-out-loud ridiculous, but those lies have a far-reaching and destabilizing effect on our communities and our democracy.

We saw this on January 6th, 2021 when Trump supporters attacked the Capitol after Trump repeatedly told them the election had been stolen. And we’re seeing it again because Donald Trump and JD Vance used a fourth-hand story shared on a Facebook page to double-down on their fictional narrative that a migrant crime wave is sweeping the country.

So that’s the bad news. Here’s the good news: COURIER is working around the clock in the final days of the election to expose Trump’s lies and desperate attempts to divide our communities.

We work in communities where voters are more likely to encounter these lies. We use rigorous, truthful journalism to combat bad information by making good information accessible to anyone who needs it.

That’s how we fight for the truth and protect democracy, and now, more than ever, we need your support.

If you’re ready to ensure our team has the resources we need in the election's closing days, can you chip in $25 to fund our crucial work? [[link removed]]
