Strengthening Secret Service

It's unacceptable that now we're at two assassination attempts on President Trump. Political violence has no place in our country, but when it does rear its ugly head, we must ensure we’ve done everything possible to prevent it from being successful. Luck cannot be a strategy.

This week, I voted for legislation that would ensure that both nominees for president, not just Donald Trump, also Kamala Harris, get the same level of Secret Service protection as the president of the United States. I urge the Senate to follow the House’s lead and pass this bill immediately.

Hurricane Francine Recovery Update

As South Louisiana continues to assess the damages from Hurricane Francine, it is critical that we have the right resources to help people and communities rebuild and recover. Shortly after the storm, I joined our entire Congressional delegation in u rging President Biden to approve Governor Jeff Landry’s request for an expedited major disaster declaration. Thankfully, that request was granted for Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary, and Terrebonne Parishes.

This major disaster declaration covers a number of parishes that received some of the greatest impact, and additional parishes may be added to this list as damage estimates continue to come in from individual communities and parishes. I’ve spoken directly with local, state and federal officials, and will continue to work to ensure the communities and families impacted by this storm have the resources they need to fully recover.

Meeting with the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber

FEMA has a responsibility to be transparent about the calculations behind Risk Rating 2.0 to justify its numbers that are devastatingly impacting the main flood coverage option for so many Louisiana families. This not only leaves an alarming gap in coverage for when a storm like Hurricane Francine hits, but it also throws the fiscal solvency of the entire NFIP into jeopardy.

This week, I spoke with the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce in D.C. to discuss our ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Francine and my efforts to hold FEMA accountable on their ill-conceived Risk Rating 2.0. It is completely unacceptable that FEMA refuses to be transparent and reveal the calculations behind this rate setting system, and I will continue pushing to get answers for policyholders in Louisiana.
