My name is Jo and I’m from Tonga, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean.
When we talk about climate change, it’s not the distant future. It’s now.

Burning fossil fuels is devastating our homes by causing more destructive
storms. Rising sea levels are eating our coastlines. For the Pacific to
survive, countries everywhere must stop using fossil fuels and switch to
renewable energy.^1

The UN climate talks happening in November — COP29 — can help us get
countries to commit to that. But this year’s host, Azerbaijan, is a
petrostate ramping up drilling for fossil fuels. They’ll do anything to
lower expectations and maintain the status quo.^2

That’s the opposite of what countries like mine need. [ [link removed] ]We need the
Azerbaijani president of COP to feel the heat from every angle. That’s why
I’m asking you to help deliver our demands to them in a letter,
John: no more fossil fuels, time to show leadership.

When people in the Pacific talk about climate change, it’s reliving the
trauma of having to rebuild and fight for our existence constantly.

Our leaders in the Pacific have just finished meeting at the Pacific
Islands Forum. The UN report released during it was crystal clear that
dealing with rising sea levels and climate change must be a priority.^3

Pacific Islands have done the least to cause the climate crisis, but we
suffer from its impacts the most. If countries like ours can go
fossil-free and 100% renewable, rich countries can too.^4

We need a global effort, particularly by countries hosting climate summits
and richer countries with more spending power. It’s their turn to make
strong climate commitments — and keep them. Not just for the sake of
countries like ours, but for everyone on Earth.
