HIV stigma declines, but Hollywood’s role remains critical
GLAAD's 5th State of HIV Stigma Study, in partnership with Gilead Science, tracks Americans' knowledge, attitudes, and sentiments around HIV. For the first time in five years, we found a decline in HIV stigma in the U.S. However, we also found the lack of HIV stories in Hollywood negatively impacts progress, such as comfortability with neighbors and coworkers. GLAAD's study shows that representing people living with HIV in media can increase comfort by up to 15%. This is the power of your support to drive acceptance and visibility. GLAAD's Studio Responsibility Index highlights need for more inclusive LGBTQ stories in film
GLAAD’s 12th Studio Responsibility Index tracks the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ characters in film, identifying key areas where studios can increase and improve fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBTQ representation. This year’s study revealed inconsistent progress from major film distributors, with a lack of transgender stories and LGBTQ characters living with HIV. In response, GLAAD pointed film studios to the programs you help make possible-- including The GLAAD List, Black Queer Creative Summit, Equity in Media and Entertainment Initiative and more--as sources for more inclusive stories and outstanding writers.
