Hi Friend,
Lee Raymond is like the Darth Vader of climate change, so we are proud to let you know that we helped pressure JP Morgan Chase into dropping him as the lead independent director position on the bank’s board of directors!
Lee Raymond was the CEO of Exxon, where he led Exxon’s campaign to spread lies about climate change. Those disinformation campaigns helped stop action to prevent climate change back in the ‘90s, helping put us in the critical situation we face today of rising weather disasters, heat and pollution.
Raymond is currently the lead independent director of the world’s top bank funder of fossil fuels, JP Morgan Chase. But not for long, in large part thanks to our work!
NYCC and our allies have been campaigning to get Lee Raymond off of JP Morgan Chase’s board since with his support the bank pumped $269 billion into financing oil, gas and coal companies in just over three years, including money to build the proposed Williams Pipeline, which would pollute New York City.
NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer is the climate movement’s champion in this fight. He decided to lead large shareholders in a “proxy” fight to boot Raymond off the board.
Thanks to a movement and Comptroller Stringer’s leadership, Raymond is now being publicly sidelined from that role after over 30 years on the bank’s board and 19 as lead director.
Of course, we’re not done: we’re pushing hard to get JP Morgan Chase to stop financing fossil fuel projects worldwide and we want Raymond off their board entirely, not just demoted. We want a Green New Deal, not Wall Street funding climate destruction that tears apart our communities.
We are very proud of NYCC’s work to oppose Raymond and JP Morgan Chase. It’s a big win!
