LGBTQ+ Stories You Should Know About
North Carolina Races Shake Up
North Carolina has been in the headlines – and unfortunately, it’s for LGBTQ+ bigotry and general hypocrisy. At the top of the ticket, an explosive CNN article revealed the destructive online posts of notorious transphobe and homophobe Mark Robinson, who is currently running for Governor.
Meanwhile, another candidate running for Superintendent of Public Instruction claimed the ‘plus’ in ‘LGBTQ+’ stood for ‘pedophilia’.
But hate like this doesn’t arise randomly out of a vacuum. In 2016, North Carolina enacted a hateful bathroom bill, launching national outrage and a partial repeal. In 2023, the bathroom bills reared their ugly heads once again, as a national effort to rollback LGBTQ+ rights swept the legislature. Bigots in North Carolina successfully overrode the Governor’s veto, passing a trio of anti-LGBTQ bills, including a “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Robinson, notably, called for trans people to be arrested if they use the wrong bathroom.
All the more reason to elect LGBTQ+ candidates at all levels in North Carolina – and protect our incumbent State Senator, Lisa Grafstein. Lisa recently spoke out against new restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights in the legislature, making it clear that choice and LGBTQ+ rights are at risk this year. Learn more about Lisa’s campaign and how you can help keep her voice in the legislature here!
