Calling for Congress to fund UNRWA

Image

This week, I joined my colleagues Reps. Carson, Jayapal, and Schakowsky at a press conference to call on Congress to immediately restore funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). UNRWA is a lifeline for nearly 6 million Palestinian refugees, providing crucial education, health, and social services. The recent decision to cut off aid to this organization has had devastating consequences. We've introduced UNWRA Funding Emergency Restoration Act of 2024 to restore this funding, which represents an opportunity to bring back life-saving care to millions of vulnerable Palestinians. Watch my remarks here.

Meeting with Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner

Image

I had a productive meeting with Minnesota Department of Transportation Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger to discuss crucial infrastructure projects in our district. Infrastructure is the backbone of our community's growth. By investing in our roads, bridges, and public transit, we're not just improving daily commutes, we're laying the foundation for a thriving economy and enhanced quality of life for everyone in Minnesota.

Addressing the Pushout Crisis of Black Girls in Schools

Image

This week, I joined my colleagues Speaker Emirata Nancy Pelosi, Reps. Rosa DeLauro, Ayanna Pressley, and Bonnie Watson Coleman at a press conference to address the disturbing findings of a recent Government Accountability Office report on the disciplinary disparities faced by Black girls in our nation's schools.

The report's findings are deeply troubling. It revealed that Black girls, while only 15% of the female student population, face nearly half of all suspensions and expulsions and in every state, Black girls are disciplined more harshly than their white peers. That's why I'm proud to co-sponsor the Ending PUSHOUT Act, led by Rep. Pressley. This crucial legislation aims to end the criminalization and over-policing of students in schools and invest in trauma-informed approaches. We must create safe, nurturing school environments for all our children, especially girls of color. Watch my speech here

Fighting for the Fifth Constituent Testimonial

Image

We recently had the opportunity to assist our constituent Mark, who was facing challenges with his Social Security Award Letter during the process of buying his home.

“I had been struggling with a Social Security and Medicare Part B issue for the past 20 years. When I turned 65 and attempted to apply for Medicare benefits at the Social Security office, I was told that I would need to wait until I had worked 10 years in the US to apply. When I returned after working for 10 years, I was able to apply for Medicare, but was charged a high premium for not applying when I had turned 65.

I have worked for the last 10 years on appealing this decision to no avail. When I attended a Town Hall hosted by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, I informed her staff on my situation, and they were able to assist me in inquiring with the SSA. Within 3 months of working with Rep. Omar's office the SSA has granted my appeal and removed my medical premium surcharge. I will now receive my full SSA benefit and am so grateful to Congresswoman Omar and her team for their help in resolving this situation.”

If you or anyone you know in the 5th District has an issue with federal government services, we are here to help—whether on immigration, Social Security claims, Veterans benefits, or more. You can call our office at 612-333-1272 or visit omar.house.gov for assistance.
