Dear John:

As you know, last weekend there was yet another attempt on President Trump's life. This time a man named Ryan Wesley Routh hid in the bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida for roughly twelve hours. Secret Service identified a gun sticking out through the bushes about 500 yards away from where President Trump was playing, and opened fire, causing Routh to flee. He was caught a short time later.

I cannot believe this happened again. I am grateful for the quick action of the Secret Service keeping President Trump safe and that he now has as much protection as President Biden. The House has unanimously voted to expand the scope of the Bipartisan Task Force to Investigate the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump so their investigation includes this second attempt. America needs answers and I am eager to support any efforts to get to the bottom of these security failures.

Supporting Our Law Enforcement in "Sanctuary Cities"

Across the country, including in my home state of Minnesota, we have seen what becomes of places that limit their cooperation with law enforcement and become so-called “sanctuary cities.” They become hotbeds of dangerous crime and depleted local resources, and they are a sanctuary to no one. Cities that willingly endanger members of their own community in such a way should be ashamed. And they certainly should not be able to receive bailouts from the federal government for a disaster they openly invited.

This week, I proudly stood in support of the No Bailouts for Sanctuary Cities Act, which prohibits funds to any sanctuary state or sanctuary city if those funds are being used to benefit illegal immigrants.

At a time when local law enforcement needs our support more than ever, I want to be clear that this legislation supports their efforts. They are the ones who have been doing the very best they can to protect their communities in the face of cities that continue to make their work harder and more dangerous. I will always support legislation that supports our officers, and I am proud to say this legislation passed in the House this week.

Why I Voted for the SAVE Act and Continuing Resolution

In states like Minnesota, illegal immigrants are able to get a driver's license and other forms of identification that can be used to vote illegally. I voted for the six month Continuing Resolution this week because it included the SAVE Act, which guarantees non-citizens will not be able to illegally vote in our elections.

My colleagues on the Left love to talk about threats to our democracy, but Governor Walz knows that non-citizens are appearing on voter rolls and even receiving ballots and has done nothing about it. It is critical to our democracy that voters have faith in their elections, and I am proud to vote for legislation that would strengthen that faith. The SAVE Act requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote, removes non-citizens from existing voter rolls, and empowers citizens to bring civil suits against election officials who fail to uphold these requirements. It also requires states make it as easy as possible to legally register to vote. I am disappointed in my colleagues who voted against this common-sense legislation.

Standing up for U.S. Companies in Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee

The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade hears from people across industries across the country. One thing we hear again and again is that the Biden-Harris Administration is walking away from trade conversations where America's voice is needed. I hear the same thing from agricultural producers and manufacturers in the 7th District. This week, we heard it from the digital trade community.

Witnesses shared with us the issues they have had with over-regulation of U.S. companies, requiring smaller businesses to spend a fortune on lawyers to make sure they are in compliance, and with the Administration's lack of support on the world stage while American companies are being discriminated against in the digital markets. You can watch my conversation with witnesses here.
