Dear Friends,
This year, Donald Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court followed up on their decision to overturn Roe v. Wade by once again refusing to protect women’s healthcare. After agreeing to hear a challenge from Idaho, with one of the most extreme abortion bans in the nation, the Court failed to affirm that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) guarantees access to emergency abortion care nationwide.
Last week, I teamed up with my colleague Emilia Sykes (OH-13) to introduce a resolution to reaffirm access to emergency abortion care for all Americans. Right now, pregnant women across the country are being turned away from emergency rooms while doctors are facing criminal penalties for simply saving a woman’s life.
Time and again, we’ve heard heartbreaking stories from states that have enacted dangerous abortion bans. Two women — one in Florida and one in Texas — were left to miscarry in public restrooms. In Arkansas, a woman went into septic shock and her fetus died after an emergency room sent her home. And in Georgia, at least two women have died after being denied emergency abortion care.
Here in New Jersey, we know that women should not need to be on their deathbed to receive an abortion. That’s why I am taking action – to protect not only women’s lives, but women’s health.
My resolution would reaffirm that the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) protects access to emergency abortion care in every state, and that all women, no matter where they live, should be able to receive the emergency care they need, including abortion.
I’m proud to have earned the support of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, National Women’s Law Center, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and over a dozen more leading abortion advocacy groups for this effort.
Know that I will continue to fight to keep politicians out of the emergency room and ensure that women all across the country are able to make their own decisions about their own bodies – whether that’s by protecting abortion care, IVF, and contraception, or by preventing MAGA extremists from using loopholes in our justice system to cherry-pick an outcome.
