Protecting Surface Water Quality
When leaves and yard waste wash into a storm drain, they end up in local lakes and rivers where they contribute to accelerated algae growth. This can result in low oxygen levels, fish kills and unsafe swimming conditions.
Help protect surface waters quality this fall by:
- Adopting a storm drain and keeping it free of yard waste.
- Stenciling a storm drain to remind others to help.
- Composting yard waste in your backyard.
- Bringing yard waste to a compost or disposal site.
- Tilling leaves into a garden for added organic matter.

Victoria Road Storm Sewer Improvement
From Sept. 24-27, storm sewer improvements are being installed on Victoria Rd. S. between the Celia Rd. loop. A four-day road closure to the northbound lane is required for the installs. A lane shift for southbound traffic will be in place along with a detour through the Ceilia Rd. loop for northbound traffic.

Volunteer Tree Planting Event
On Sept. 12, volunteers planted 13 new trees within Marie Park. In one area the trees were planted in groupings of both understory and overstory species. This approach mimics a natural forest community, following guidance from the City’s Natural Resources Management Plan.
Other trees were planted along the shore of Marie Pond, to replace invasive trees such as buckthorn that had been removed, as well as several ash trees that were removed due to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) disease. Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive non-native insect from Asia that feeds on ash trees and disrupts the nutrients and water that flows through the tree, eventually killing it. Volunteers planted native tree species to replace the trees removed, including Bi-color/Swamp White Oak, Bur Oak, White Oak, Kentucky Coffee Tree, River Birch, Blue Beech and Pagoda Dogwood.
