To build support for a proposed freeze & forgiveness of rent, mortgage, utility, and debt payments, activists organized a car caravan across the city

John,

On Friday, millions of Americans found themselves with their backs to the wall, forced to make a Faustian choice between paying their housing costs, or instead feeding their families.

At no point in our nation's history has the failure of our economic system been more apparent. Thousands of San Franciscans are already homeless, and without meaningful rent & mortgage relief, our political establishment will swell their ranks once delayed balloon payments eventually become due.

That’s why we support a federal freeze and forgiveness of all rent and mortgage payments throughout the duration of the pandemic. The Rent & Mortgage Cancellation Act proposed by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) would do precisely that.

Can you contribute today to help make that proposal a federal law?

On Friday, we published a blog post explaining why rent & mortgage relief is essential. It promoted the nationwide rent strike currently underway, and also reported back on a May Day car caravan. Thousands of San Franciscans raised their voices demanding that officials #CancelTheRent, while practicing the social distancing necessary to stay safe during the pandemic.

As we wrote on Friday, "Rent & mortgage payments were a struggle for too many San Franciscans even before the pandemic. Those whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the emerging depression stand with their backs to the wall."

San Franciscans deserve a voice in Congress who will stand with us, instead of with corporate landlords and banks. Your contribution today can help us win San Francisco a new voice in Washington!

Would federal housing policy look any different if the Democratic Party were led by someone other than a wealthy corporate landlord?

Nancy Pelosi has never faced another Democrat in a November election—until now. Can you chip in $25 today to help win a new voice for San Francisco who stands with working Americans, instead of banks and corporate landlords?

Many thanks for your support!

Yours,
Shahid

PS — Has the pandemic left you unable to contribute financially? You can still make a big difference in our campaign to liberate San Francisco's voice in Washington by signing up to volunteer! Our campaign staff hosts training videoconferences every other day, and is excited to include you!
