FRIDAY, 9/20/2024

We’re two and a half years into the Ukraine-Russia war and the Biden-Harris Administration still maintains a non-strategic approach to aiding Ukraine. Their policy (or lack thereof) reflects Russia’s success in being able to deter the U.S. and NATO by threatening a wider war. But Russia isn’t capable of waging a wider war.

So we failed to deter Russia from starting a war in February of 2022, and now they are able to scare us off from aiding Ukraine in a careful, systematic and strategic fashion that could have this war in a different place than it is now. We are letting Russian propaganda direct our policy.

Where is this Russian army that is going to fight a wider war? And if they have an army capable of fighting a wider war, why isn’t it in Ukraine now making up for their pitiful performance for the last two and a half years? Putin does not have the capability to wage a wider war in Europe, and yet the Biden-Harris Administration is letting Moscow strong-arm us into backing down from having a strategic approach to aiding Ukraine.

Whenever Putin has rattled the nuclear saber, there has been zero evidence that any nuclear forces have redeployed or even moved into a higher state of alert. Putin has been bluffing and the Biden-Harris Administration has fallen for the bluff.

JOIN MY CONGRESSIONAL SURVEY: WHAT SHOULD CONGRESS DO IN REGARDS TO UKRAINE AND RUSSIA?

Driving the Week: I wrote an op-ed for the Washington Examiner about Keir Starmer’s first visit to Washington as Britain’s prime minister last Friday which to no one’s surprise, did not go well.

READ THE FULL OP-ED

His meeting with President Joe Biden failed to resolve U.K.-U.S. disputes over whether Britain could transfer its Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine for use inside Russia. Kyiv has repeatedly asked that such restrictions on munitions like Storm Shadows be lifted.

Last week’s Starmer-Biden meeting did not change the status quo, to Ukraine’s dismay. The United Kingdom needs Washington’s approval because Storm Shadows contain technology from the United States and rely on our intelligence. Although there were other topics on the agenda, this first meeting since Starmer took office provided an opportunity to affirm the “special relationship” and the shared objective of defeating Moscow’s unprovoked aggression. Instead, Starmer was unceremoniously rebuffed. Worse, the Biden administration showed that, even in its last months, it remained wavering, hesitant, and uncertain on Ukraine 2 1/2 years since the war began.

Elaborate preparations preceded the Starmer-Biden meeting, starting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conferring in Kyiv. Blinken then met with Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski, reaffirming that “we’re determined to see Ukraine win this war” and “we will adapt, we will adjust, and make sure that Ukraine has what it needs when it needs it to deal with this Russian aggression.” A decision to allow the British to proceed seemed almost assured. But the next day in Washington, that did not happen. There was only silence.

Starmer implied afterward that decisions regarding Storm Shadows had simply been postponed, perhaps until the end of September when Biden and other world leaders addressed the United Nations General Assembly. Further delay alone, however, is harmful to Ukraine’s self-defense efforts. Delay, unfortunately, encapsulates the essence of Biden’s unwillingness to act decisively not just to prevent Ukraine from being overrun, but to ensure it is restored to its full sovereignty and territorial integrity, NATO’s stated goal.

I joined LBC to discuss the ongoing U.K.-U.S. dispute over restrictions on Storm Shadows cruise missiles.

Critical Context: The British Storm Shadow cruise missiles involve licensed, protected U.S. technology, which may require approval. These missiles rely heavily on U.S. intelligence. While some in the U.K. may say, “to hell with Joe Biden, let’s just give the missiles to Ukraine anyway”, I don’t think that’s a good precedent to set.

My Final Word: The U.S. and our allies need to act in a strategic fashion and work together, which we haven’t done at all during this war.

I joined Piers Morgan to debrief after the second assassination attempt on Trump’s life.

Critical Context:Russia sent a nuclear-powered submarine to Havana, Cuba – 90 miles off the coast of the Florida Keys. This show of strength and global reach was very reminiscent of the Cold War.

My Final Word: People don't want to talk about mental illness, but that appears to be what's at work in both assassination attempts against Donald Trump. We should be worried about more copycats, not just against Trump but other political leaders as well.
