Hi John,
I’m reaching out to talk about two things near and dear to my heart: Taylor Swift and protecting our right to vote. You may be questioning how these two things correlate but let me explain.
Last week, Taylor Swift asked her fans to check their voter registrations and make a plan to vote, and in the first 24 hours alone, over 400,000 people answered the call!
As a Swiftie, I loved seeing the world’s biggest pop star set a great example for civic engagement – especially because as a pro-voting activist, I’m deeply concerned to see fewer young Americans registered than were in 2020. [1]
So, when Taylor Swift made that ask – and hundreds of thousands responded – I was filled with hope for the future of our country.
But John, we’re not out of the woods yet. Right now, some politicians in states like Texas, Florida, and Georgia, are using lies about our democracy to silence our voices. You see, they see 2020's record youth turnout as a problem – not something we should all encourage.
And in the U.S. Congress, they’re even going as far as using the threat of a government shutdown to pass their voter suppression agenda into law.
In her post, Taylor Swift said “the simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth” – something we at Common Cause know all too well. That’s why all year, and through Election Day and beyond, our state leaders, activists, and volunteers are hard at work:
- Defending voters against anti-voter legislation enacted since the last presidential election, like strict voter ID, limits on mail-in voting, or even purges of eligible voters from the rolls. [2]
- Countering the disinformation that fuels these voter suppression efforts with the truth about the integrity of our elections from trusted sources.
- Recruiting and training thousands of knowledgeable, nonpartisan volunteers at polling sites across the country to help every voter know their rights and make their voices heard.
So if you want to see more – not fewer – young voters like me show up and make our voices count this year, the most strategic donation you can make as someone who cares about defending American democracy is by fueling our Election Protection efforts.
To make sure everyone who volunteers can be trained and placed in time for November, the moment to act is right now: Training and placing a volunteer costs $50. Will you meet this moment and chip in $50 – or whatever you can today – to sponsor a volunteer? > >
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
We must maintain this momentum over the next 45 days as voters begin to cast their ballots. It won’t be easy, but with your help, we can empower and protect voters across the country.
Thank you,
Izzy Bronstein, National Campaigns Director
