Capital One-Discover Deal Hits Roadblock In Bank Merger Overhaul

The Fed hasn’t officially changed its merger policy. But even without a formal change, the central bank may ultimately apply tougher standards than in the past, when critics say the federal banking agencies were too quick to approve deals. “Historically, the agencies changed merger review policy by approving or denying mergers,” said Jesse Van Tol, the president and CEO of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and an opponent of the Capital One-Discover deal. AOC Proposes $30 Billion Social Housing Authority

Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota introduced the bill on the steps of the Capitol on Wednesday. If it were to pass, the Homes Act of 2024 would enable the federal government to acquire real estate for permanently affordable housing, develop new subsidized homes and apartments, and finance deeply affordable projects for rent or purchase. Why Schools Are Ripping Up Playgrounds Across The US

This summer, California’s governor and legislature agreed to place a $10 billion school bond before voters in November. If approved, a portion of it may be used to plant trees and reduce the amount of pavement around public schools. In Los Angeles, the school district has committed $500 million to greening projects, and the board has approved a $9 billion school facilities bond, its largest ever, of which about $1.25 billion could go toward planting trees, creating shade structures and removing asphalt.
