Back to its former glory: Royton Town Hall re-opens following huge restoration

Royton Town Hall and Library have officially reopened following a landmark restoration project, bringing the historic building back to its original Victorian splendour.

A new community garden has also been created at the back, named in memory of local war hero Sergeant John Hogan who received the Victoria Cross in 1914 for his bravery during the First World War.

Oldham Council Leader, Cllr Arooj Shah and MP for Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton, Jim McMahon unveiled a plaque to mark the completion of the works. And Oldham Mayor, Cllr Zahid Chauhan, officially opened the Sergeant John Hogan VC Garden.

Don’t Trash Oldham: New gulley cleaning operation starts

The council has launched a new boroughwide gulley clearing operation.

The clean-up – part of our Don’t Trash Oldham campaign – will help water drain off our roads, preventing a build-up and cutting the risk of flooding to homes and properties.

Councillor Chris Goodwin, Cabinet Member for Don’t Trash Oldham, said: “We understand it can be frustrating for residents to see a blocked gulley on their street. So, we’ve taken the feedback on board and getting on with the job.”

We’ll be cleaning the gullies on a rolling ward by ward basis.

We’ve identified which areas need cleaning first using data which shows which ward has had the least gulley inspections over the past three years.
