Anti-Israel on Campus Report: “Unlike anything we’ve seen in the past”

A total of 2,087 anti-Israel incidents of assault, vandalism, harassment, protests/actions and divestment resolutions were recorded on campus in the United States between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. This represents a 477 percent increase in those same categories compared to the prior school year, according to

a new report from the ADL Center on Extremism. This surge has dramatically altered campus life for Jewish students.

Some of the incidents counted in this report also referenced classic antisemitic tropes like purported Jewish wealth, greed and control over political affairs. Alarmingly, the overall spike in incidents included 28 assaults, which comes after no such assaults were recorded in 2022-2023.

“The antisemitic, anti-Zionist vitriol we’ve witnessed on campus is unlike anything we’ve seen in the past,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “Since the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel, the anti-Israel movement’s relentless harassment, vandalism, intimidations and violent physical assaults go way beyond the peaceful voicing of a political opinion. Administrators and faculty need to do much better this year to ensure a safe and truly inclusive environment for all students, regardless of religion, nationality or political views, and they need to start now.”

‘John Doe v. Intel’ Antisemitic Workplace Discrimination Case: ADL is joining as co-counsel in John Doe v. Intel Corporation to address antisemitic discrimination in the workplace. The plaintiff — an Israeli living and working in NY — was assigned to report to an Intel executive who bullied and undermined him, and publicly amplified social media messages celebrating the murder of Israelis. When the plaintiff, who had outstanding performance reviews and had recently been promoted, reported the anti-Israel hostility and discriminatory workplace conduct, Intel forced him into a lower-paying role. ADL is committed to holding Intel accountable and reminding all
businesses that such bigotry is unacceptable. This lawsuit builds on ADL’s efforts to combat workplace antisemitism. More than 100 major corporations have signed on to the ADL “Workplace Pledge to Fight Antisemitism” and as part of the White House’s National Strategy to Combat Antisemitism, every Fortune 500 company received ADL information on antisemitism, religious accommodations and Jewish culture and contributions.

Largest University Endowments Could Lose $33 Billion if Divested from Israel: A first-of-its-kind report from ADL affiliate JLens finds that adopting an Israel divestment strategy could lead to significant negative financial implications over a ten-year period for university endowments. For example, Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Princeton are projected to collectively lose more than $8 billion in estimated returns on their endowments over the decade if they align with BDS. Confronting Antisemitism on Campus: In an ADL webinar on “Confronting Antisemitism on Campus,” our experts joined just-graduated student leader (and ADL summer intern!) Luda Isakharov to discuss the alarming climate on campus and how to fight back and to support students. The panel discussed the need to hold accountable those who violate campus policies. Watch the video for a moving moment as Luda explained the challenges of speaking up as a Jewish student, saying “if you know a student who is speaking out, we need to wrap them in love and support... since I know from personal experience it can be a very lonely place.”

Preparing for 10/7: In just a few weeks, we will mourn the one-year mark since the devastating October 7 Hamas attacks, and we will continue to speak out for the hostages who remain in captivity in Gaza a year later. We are not the only ones preparing for 10/7. On campus, we can expect protests and disruptions on this somber day by anti-Israel student groups. ADL has reached out to university administrators nationwide, spelling out steps these leaders can take… contingency planning, speaking out against antisemitism and showing solidarity with students who are grieving, and making sure there is enough security to avoid outbursts of hate and even violence.

Making Progress

Nearly 5000 Houston Officers Take ADL Class: ADL’s Southwest regional office has just finished a year-long effort to provide its Hate Crimes for Law Enforcement Professionals class to almost every veteran officer in the Houston Police Department, about 5000 officers in all. The class brought ADL insights about antisemitism and other forms of hate to these officers. This year, the regional team also provided the Hate Crimes classes for El Paso law enforcement officials, Austin Police Department cadets and the Rice University Police Department. In Houston, ADL has also held a class for cadets at the police academy for the past several years to share our guidance on policing in
partnership with the Jewish community, including understanding antisemitism and supporting safe observance of the High Holidays.
