People For the American Way.

Friend,

Are there Taylor Swift fans in your family? Maybe you’ve seen her endorsement of Kamala Harris for President![1]

In the very same post where she’s celebrating Harris as “a steady-handed, gifted leader,” she also explains how she was the victim of an artificial intelligence (AI) deepfake attack by the Trump campaign. Donald Trump’s campaign shared artificially generated images of women wearing “Swifties for Trump” gear and an image of Swift herself as Uncle Sam encouraging people to vote for Trump.

Add your name to our petition urging the Senate to act to regulate AI technology and its impact on our elections now!>>

Artificially generated images and videos are quickly becoming one of the most impactful ways for disinformation to spread. The Senate is weighing bills that would help rein in artificially generated content and create tools for people online to determine if content was created with AI.

To help curb the influence of AI in our elections, we’ve endorsed a set of bills that will create needed guardrails for this technology and we need the Senate to act quickly to pass them. These bills would prohibit the distribution of political or issue advertisements that contain materially deceptive deepfakes; require disclaimers on election communications that are generated by AI within 120 days of the election; and require election administrators to develop guidelines on how to address the risks of AI and disinformation.

Bad actors have been using deceptive social media posts to influence the election for years, and this is the newest tool they’re using to spread doubt and false messages. We need to take steps immediately to rein it in.

Please take action and add your name to demand the Senate act now!>>

Thank you for your advocacy,

Charlie Everett, People For the American Way
