Misinformation and disinformation is rampant in our media, especially when it comes to information  police violence against marginalized folks. Misinformation with police propaganda like NYPD’s response to its use of force, coining it as “NYPD bullets”, further emphasizes our need for people-centered power over media and technology You may have just heard that MediaJustice is Shifting Terrain with our new strategy, but we have been shifting the terrain in mis-information and dis-information for the past 15 years. Projects like our Copaganda Clapback Curriculum supports abolitionist movements and has shifted the narrative by returning narrative power to our people.

Check out our video from our in-person training session of the Copaganda Curriculum in Minneapolis, MN.
We remember when the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) featured white supremacist imagery on their vehicles resembling the “Thin Blue Line” flag and the text: “Always Choose the Hard Right.” We remember when examples of copaganda predicated on anti-Blackness in the Asian American community. We remember the massive uptick in copaganda since the Uprisings of 2020.

As our Senior Curriculum Writing Specialist, Rumsha Sajid said, “People are paranoid about their communities - copaganda fuels their fear. Now more than ever, people fear critical race theory, drag queens, and even public libraries. These fears are all rooted in making people fear one another and public space.”
MediaJustice answered this call to action by shifting the police-generated narrative away from mis-information/dis-information criminalizing our communities and toward exposing the blatant control police authorities have in the media . And with the help of our MediaJustice Network community members from Line Break Media, CreaTV San Jose, Generation Justice, and the researchers from the Harvard Shorenstein Center of Media, Politics, and Public Policy, we created Copaganda Clapback.
