Report: Electing the American President

Every four years in November, Americans head to the polls to elect a president and vice president of the United States. But what happens between the time everyone’s votes are cast and when the next president takes the oath of office on January 20?

The Electoral Count Reform Act (ECRA) is one critical safeguard that ensures our presidential elections run smoothly. The law, passed in 2022, outlines the updated rules and timeline for casting and counting electoral votes in presidential elections. The 2024 election will be the first one utilizing the ECRA’s updated rules for finalizing the presidential election.

Electing the President: From Election Day to the Joint Session, CLC’s new report — released with Protect Democracy and Bipartisan Policy Center — comprehensively outlines the procedures and timeline for finalizing our presidential election process.
