Improving lives with access to safe water in Sudan
For decades, people living in the remote community of Alsabaat in eastern Sudan had no other option but to use a nearby canal as their water source. Seven thousand people, 60 percent of whom are children, used the canal’s contaminated, unsafe water mixed with algae. After UNICEF rehabilitated a solarized water treatment plant, families in the area now have access to safe, clean water. People are able to cook and drink water from a source close to home and children, like 12-year-old Fatima, are now spending time playing and learning instead of making long treks to collect water.

Responding to the mpox outbreak across Africa
Across countries in Africa, including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, the number of confirmed cases of mpox is rising, disproportionately affecting children. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 21,000 suspected mpox cases have already been reported. UNICEF is ramping up efforts to help prevent the spread of the disease by delivering essential relief, training health care workers and helping educate affected communities with accurate prevention and care information.
