President's Message As we observe Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September, it's important to recognize the connection between childhood obesity and various lifestyle factors, including sleep. Research shows that short sleep duration can contribute to weight gain and obesity in children, affecting their ability to regulate hunger and physical activity levels. As school nurses, we can support students by educating them and their families on the importance of healthy sleep habits in addition to balanced nutrition and regular exercise. This week also marks Student Sleep Health Week, a perfect opportunity to highlight the vital role of sleep in students' overall well-being. NASN has several resources to help school nurses lead the charge in reducing childhood obesity. By integrating evidence-based practices into daily interactions with students, we can promote healthy behaviors and facilitate connections to community resources. Together, we can create an impact that extends far beyond our individual schools, helping to shape healthier lifestyles for the next generation.
