September is National Preparedness Month!

Did you know that the U.S. Census Bureau produces timely local data that are used in various ways for emergency planning and preparedness? The Statistics in Schools (SIS) program recently created two new 5-Minute Warm-Up Challenges that display these data in an easy-to-digest format for students.

How Ready Are We? Exploring Natural Disasters and Emergency Preparedness has students use information including whether households have an emergency water supply, an evacuation kit, and more to explain how prepared U.S. residents are for natural disasters and prompt them to think critically when preparing for emergencies.

Growth on the Coast: Exploring Changes in Population and the Potential Impact of Natural Hazards has students explore the changes in population of the 25 most populous Atlantic and Gulf Coastline counties from 2000 to 2019, and identify areas with the smallest and largest growth. Students will also consider the risks associated with living along the coast.
