This week Governor Josh Green, along with Mayor Rick Blangiardi and other community leaders, formally unveiled ʻAʻala Respite — a new medical services facility dedicated to providing shelter and healthcare for the homeless on Oahu.

The new facility — located near downtown Honolulu at 445 N. King St. — houses 32 treatment beds where patients can receive 24-hour care from on-site physicians and staff.
“This facility is a focus of safety, of recovery, of rest, of top-quality health care services for the homeless,” Governor Green said.
In collaboration with the state Office on Homelessness and Housing Solutions, the city Department of Community Service has also installed 30 kauhale housing units in the facility’s parking lot, offering a clean and safe environment where patients can receive essential medical treatment and support — in a private space that they can call their own.
An unprecedented example of collaboration between Governor Green and Mayor Blangiardi, ʻAʻala is a city-owned facility with medical respite care and other wraparound services for the homeless funded by the state of Hawaii.
The facility is part of Governor Green's innovative approach to homelessness, providing those in need with comprehensive medical care and shelter — and preventing repeated and unnecessary visits to hospital emergency rooms.
ʻAʻala began accepting patients in mid-July, with approximately 45 individuals currently receiving care.
