“Police find remains of SUV driver involved in Deer Park pipeline fire,” Houston Chronicle's Peter Warren and Octavia Johnson — “Deer Park city officials confirmed human remains were found in the vehicle involved in the pipeline fire near Deer Park and La Porte [ [link removed] ] after it was towed by authorities Thursday morning following the days-long incident that led to the evacuation of nearby homes [ [link removed] ].
The situation has developed into a criminal investigation, and officials said no further information will be released until the investigation concludes.
Deer Park OEM spokesperson Kaitlyn Bluejacket said the Deer Park Police Department and Harris County Medical Examiner are preparing to begin the next steps of the investigation into how the emergency transpired at the Energy Transfer property off Spencer Highway.
Authorities have not provided any other information about the driver. As of around 11 a.m. Thursday, no one from the medical examiner's office had been called to the scene, spokesman Shane Hughes said.
There was a large police presence in the area Thursday morning. Deer Park police equipment was at the scene and a blue tent was erected over the burned SUV.
The pipeline fire shrank significantly on Wednesday but was expected to keep burning Thursday, with officials previously stating they hope to complete repairs by 6 p.m [ [link removed] ].
Located on the border of Deer Park, La Porte and Pasadena, the fire has been burning since Monday. It may have sparked when the SUV hit an above-ground pipeline valve. Energy Transfer owns the natural gas pipeline.
Deer Park OEM officials said in a Thursday statement that Energy Transfer is working with third-party contractors to contain the fire through the installation of appropriate infrastructure.
Deer Park officials lifted the evacuation order for areas surrounding the fire Wednesday at 6 p.m. Spencer Highway between Luella Avenue and East/Canada Boulevard remains closed. The Walmart on Spencer Highway reopened at 10 a.m. Thursday. Air monitoring will continue at nearby schools, including Heritage Elementary and College Park Elementary as of Thursday morning."
