Join Women Winning founder, former board member, and Minnesota’s first woman Lieutenant Governor, Marlene M. Johnson, for her upcoming book launch: Rise to the Challenge: A Memoir of Politics, Leadership, and Love
[[link removed]]
Celebrate the book launch of Women Winning founder and former board member Marlene M. Johnson’s Rise to the Challenge: A Memoir of Politics, Leadership, and Love on Monday, September 30th, 7:00 PM, in the Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Dean Nisha Botchwey will open the event, and the author will be in conversation with Lori Sturdevant.
The inspiring life story of Minnesota’s first woman Lieutenant Governor: breaking political ground, navigating patriarchal tradition, and persevering through great personal loss.
Marking a milestone for women in state government, Marlene M. Johnson became Minnesota’s first woman lieutenant governor under Rudy Perpich’s gubernatorial administration in January 1983. That same year, she met her husband, Peter, and their deeply loving relationship profoundly sustained her for twenty-seven years. Rise to the Challenge weaves these personal and professional stories together in a courageous portrait of dedication, leadership, and unwavering faith in the public good.
Marlene M. Johnson was Minnesota’s first woman Lieutenant Governor, serving in Governor Rudy Perpich’s administration from 1983 until 1991. She is a co-founder and former board member of Women Winning, and the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. She was executive director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for nearly two decades. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya’s Dream, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America, and a trustee of The Alexandria Trust. In 1988, she was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden. She lives in Washington, D.C.
More details:
- The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

“Minnesota is leading the way on transgender rights” by Rep. Leigh Finke, featured opinion in the Hill
[[link removed]]
If you are among the 70 percent of Americans who do not know a transgender person: Hi! My name is Leigh Finke, my pronouns are she/her/hers. I’m a parent, I’m a renter, I have a lovely girlfriend, and a strong community here in Minnesota, where I also serve in the House of Representatives.
I was elected in 2022 as the first out transgender state legislator. For the last two years, I have worked with Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan to successfully pass at least a half-dozen laws protecting the rights of transgender people, and access to healthcare. Many of those bills I authored. I love being trans, I love my community, and I’m honored to have the chance to fight for our future.
The biggest move we made in Minnesota — and the one receiving the most attention — was becoming a trans refuge state. The transgender refuge law protects transgender, non-binary and two-spirit patients and their families who are in the state of Minnesota to receive transgender health care, shielding them from laws in other states that limit or ban access to that care. I think of it as a bubble law. If you’re in the Minnesota bubble for this care, you’re protected by our values: bodily autonomy, access to world-class healthcare, and independent decision-making free of government intrusion.

No matter, this group just wants women to lead
[[link removed]]
Teresa Kittridge is so invested in encouraging rural women to run for office that she doesn’t care what party they come from.
“We are all about better supporting each other as women,” Kittridge said. “Of course we don’t agree on everything, but we all need to learn how to be there for each other and inspire each other to lead.”
Kittridge, of Marcell, Minn., an unincorporated area 29 miles north of Grand Rapids, lives in a part of the state that has flipped in recent elections from blue to red. But what matters most to her is connecting women of all ideologies through the organization she founded, 100 Rural Women.
Running for office isn’t the only thing her organization focuses on. It’s a networking system designed to encourage women in leadership in community and business roles as well. But it’s election season, and many of the women she works with want to see more women running, or want to run for office themselves.
